'Singing in the rain' at St Helens as Ammanford stun Swans with stunning 70-run victory

Rhodri Huw Davies16 Jun 2024 - 16:20

In a rain affected game Ammanford were worthy-winners in a thrilling encounter, beating current champions, Swansea by 70 runs.

Saturday, 15 June 2024 - 1st Team vs. Swansea CC (South Wales Premier Cricket League: Matchday 7 @ St Helens, Swansea)

Having lost the toss and being out into bat by Swansea's stand-in skipper, Bradley Wadlan, Ammanford got off to a shaky start, losing both Saihaj Jaspal and Gruff Owen with just 37 on the board inside 12 overs. However, a third-wicket partnership of 75 from 72 balls between opener Xavie Clarke and Aussie import Stephan Muller steadied the ship for the Town.

Clarke fell just short of his half century (49) with his usual flamboyant stroke play, before being caught at long off. Muller took on the mantel to score an unbeaten 67, providing a platform that was ably built on by skipper Rhys Huw Davies (17) as Ammanford reached a total of 167-6 before the rain came in at 2:46pm, and halted play after 37 overs of the allocated 50.

After the rain delay, the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method was utilised and a revised target of 181 to get from 32 overs was set for Swansea.

Ammanford’s Fahad Sabir (2-17) castled both openers, Kurtis Marsh (18) and Adrian Azmy (2) by the 8th over, all before Owen Davies (3-23) on a hat-trick ball in his first over removed acting Swansea captain Wadlan (3) and keeper Will Davey (0) with successive deliveries, which kept the home side way behind the DLS target required at the end of each over bowled.

Pressure was continuously applied by the Ammanford bowlers, superbly backed up in the field, and Swansea wickets continued to tumble at regular intervals. Ammanford's notable display in the field was a show of brilliant catching, with Jaspal claiming 4 catches for himself in the mid or long-on position. The tight bowling by off-spinner Clarke (2-27) also applied further pressure and it was left to the in-form youngster, Cian Roach (2-7) to clean up the Swansea tail, who were well beaten and all out for just 110 after 26.1 overs.

Ammanford were the deserved winners, gaining a crucial 19 points and lifting them to 7th in the Premier League table.

They will now be hoping to capitalise on this splendid performance when they welcome Cardiff CC to Ammanford Park, next Saturday, 22 June (12:30pm Start).
